Reminiscing.
Chris hadn’t been back to Hamburg for over ten years but this was the place he grew as a professional. Back in the United Kingdom where he had trained and got some crucial breaks, wrestling on television at a young age and traveling the Isle wrestling at holiday parks and small venues was great but he wanted to be the best, watching the big names travel around the world to perfect and hone their skills and that is what Chris wanted to do. Quitting a major promotion to travel to Germany was a huge gamble at the time but it most certainly paid off.
The wind rustles the untamed brown locks of Chris Cripplers hair, wearing a specially tailored black suit underneath his black trench coat, he walks across a huge grass lawn that is surrounded by trees and access to a nearby autobahn. Chris stops and looks around the field in Hamburg with a look of fondness upon his aged face. Remembering the times he had spent here all those years ago.
“I was very fortunate back in the United Kingdom when I got my big break on television, I may have been the whipping boy for the big names to save me or partner me in main event tag team matches, but I had been given this ultimate opportunity to be on television each Saturday and that was unheard off for someone my age” Chris recollects fondly. “But I saw guys who were bigger than me, in both size and professionally, return back from travelling from India, Saudi Arabia, Europe and they always returned wrestling so much better than the guys based in the UK. I could of sat and got a nice pay check doing the same thing night in and night out. But I wanted to be the best! I wanted to be one of those guys travelling the world and that is exactly what I did. I quit the best opportunity I had been given, some thought I was a lunatic leaving a television promotion for grandeur, but I went to the all-stars promotion and he said I’d wrestle someone better than me each show. The only way to better myself would be competing against the best and that is what I did for a year! I wrestled better guys and I became something of a commodity. That is when this opportunity came about..” Chris lifts his arms out and pivots on the spot. “I came to Germany and when I arrived here it was a sight I’ve only seen in movies. A giant circus tent with caravan trailers behind it, old cars parked on the green, this would be where I’d stay for weeks at a time as it held sixteen man tournaments. Wrestling every day to accumulate points and in the final week is where the men with the most points would battle to decide the winner of that tournament. I’d go from Hamburg for six weeks, Hanover, Bremen and even going over to Austria! I would spend six months wrestling the best guys in the world! This is where I went from being a good wrestler to being one of the best in the world!”
Chris rakes his hair with his right hand to prevent it blowing into his face, a wry smile on his face as he remembers encounters with wrestlers from all over the world, a look of realisation comes on his face as Chris points down at the ground and lets out a snigger.
“It was actually here where I encounters this stick thin, long haired guy wearing pink trunks, I didn’t take much notice as it was my name on the marquis and posters and he was only starting out. A young Canadian who wanted to do what I had done years before and he captured a lot of attention through his appearances here.” Chris stops pointing at the ground and crosses his arms. ”He returned back from his time in Europe a better competitor and went to Simcoe County Championship Wrestling a wrestler on the rise! The start of the age of the rocker! The Rock Soldier! The Jukebox Hero! The man who held the EWC Television title a record breaking time and left Sin City Wrestling the last ever Internet Champion. He is the man who will be standing before myself and Mark Storm on Day two of the Global Heritage Festival. Griffin Hawkins, our special guest referee!” A big smile appears on the British veterans face. “It was good seeing you after so many years, Griffin, when I made a couple of appearances on the final SCW shows. I had watched you have a tremendous career at EWC, where you have returned and I look forward in seeing you compete on Brawl, and to reacquaint ourselves after all that time was great and your future is something I’ll always look out for. But you’ve found yourself stepping into the ring with two men who have a much storied history! It would usually be a war of attrition but with the rules in place, it will be a match of pure wrestling, something that goes back to our routes Griffin and something I’m sure you’ll uphold when that bell tolls and the match begins!”
Chris lifts his right hand up in a clenched fist before extending his index finger out. “We had our encounters in Skyfire Wrestling with multiple title matches and a show named after us” He extends his middle finger up so two fingers are showing. “Both coming to GWD late last year and we both knew this scenario would happen as we are the biggest names here!” Chris extends his ring finger out signalling three. “One of our first match in 2018 was our battle for the American Justice Championship” The little finger is extended showing four fingers. “It was announced a few days ago about a special showcase match in Japan. A sixty minute iron man match!” Chris extends his thumb out. “But before that we’re going to be headlining this festival in a Marquis of Queensbury rules match! When I said earlier about our storied history, Griffin, I wasn’t kidding as there is no two men in this business who can say they’re true arch nemeses like Mark Storm and Chris Crippler!”
“But like every good story there is a beginning, a middle and an end and it’s about time this ends. I want this story to end. If I am defeated by Mark Storm then I will not challenge for the American Justice Championship whilst he holds the belt.” Chris’ top lip lifts in disgust. “But I intend to be walking away from this with that championship in my procession! You may be a ‘dog of war’ but I’m going to shaving your leg, sticking the lethal injection into your vein, squeezing down and watching your body become lifeless and limp. You’ve had your run as champion with your little god complex and feet obsession, running with Jack Tilman and Devin Hearst and conquering the trios divisions across the globe, you seem to be the biggest dog as you cock your leg up and mark your territory! But I need to put you down, Mark. For the sake of GWD and the American Justice Championship! Hence the Marquis of Queensbury rules match!” He smirks. “Pure wrestling to showcase our abilities as competitors, no underhanded tactics or getting feet out for kicks, pure wrestling to end this festival with a professional wrestling bout that is all about WRESTLING! From my beginnings here in sixteen man tournaments that lasted weeks to a two day festival to crown the inaugural Heritage Champion. I intend to show everyone in the Global Wrestling Division why I am one of the best wrestlers in the world! Why NJFC is showcasing myself and Storm in a sixty minute iron man match! Why my name is mentioned in multiple promotions as to who they want to see compete in their ring!”
Chris rakes his hair once again as it blows into his eyes. “With television shows, books, comics and life itself.. all things come to an end. The hero of the ‘dogs of war’ and the British sensation face for the final time.. Griffin Hawkins as guest referee to enforce this encounter. Dogs of War rumoured to be around the event. A rivalry that has been a year in the making will come to an explosive and deadly end!” He mimes a championship belt around his waist. “It started with you dethroning me as Skyfire Champion and it will end as I take your American Justice Championship! A fitting end to our story, Mark, the bridesmaid finally becomes the bride, the hero defeated by the villain, the dog put down by the vet!” A sadistic smile appear upon the veterans face. “From respectful beginnings, the final chapter is being written before you, It all ends in a blaze of glory..”
